Six warm plant-based lunches to order in NYC this winter, with price, calories, protein, fiber and allergens for each, plus where to find them.
A salad is a fine lunch in June. In a New York November, with the wind coming down 42nd Street, it starts to feel like a punishment.
These are the six warm plant-based lunches we'd point you to on a cold day. We've included the price, calories, protein and fiber for each, so you can choose by appetite instead of guessing.
If you just want the short answer, order the Chili Bowl. It has the most protein and fiber of the six, and it's labeled gluten-free.

1. Chili Bowl: the all-rounder
Brown rice and quinoa under three bean chili, with plant-based sour cream and turmeric onions. Order this when you have a long afternoon ahead. Contains mushroom protein, miso, soy, onion, garlic, tomato and cilantro.
2. Japanese Rice Bowl: the big one
White rice, roasted sweet potato, roasted bok choy, miso-glazed tofu, cucumber salad, pickled lotus root, cashew tamari crunch and tahini dressing. At 810 calories, this is the one for when breakfast didn't happen. Contains soy, cashew, garlic, onion and sesame.
3. Pasta Bolognese: the comfort order
Quinoa fusilli with a mushroom-protein bolognese, superseed mix, green herbal oil and fresh herbs. It's the bowl for people who insist they don't want a bowl. Contains mushroom protein, soy, onion, garlic, tomato and cilantro.
4. Coconut Curry Bowl: the warm-you-up
Brown rice with coconut peanut butter curry sauce, steamed greens and our Ghent-style kimchi. Contains onion, peanut, buckwheat, soy, garlic and cilantro.
5. Three Bean Chili: the light lunch
Pinto, black and cannellini beans with paprika, served with plant-based sour cream. It's a starter on the menu, but at 350 calories and 12 g of protein, it also works as a smaller lunch.
6. Moroccan Stew: the gentle one
Quinoa, roasted sweet potato, Moroccan stew, sweet onions, root vegetables, herbs and lemon harissa. It's the lightest of the six bowls at 392 calories, with 10 g of fiber. It's also the lowest in protein, so add a side if you need more. Contains soy, garlic and onion.
Can't decide? Order two
The Soup & Bowl ($16.95) pairs the soup of the day with a small portion of any bowl. The Sampler ($36) gets you three half-portion bowls, which is a good move if you're sharing, or just very hungry.
On a cold day we'd also look at the Miso Soup ($8.95), made with white miso, vegetables, tahini and wakame.
